An Uncoated Metal Reference in a Cleaning Trial: Keep Its Finish Comparable

An uncoated reference can help evaluate a practical coating question, but its material and care history must be comparable to the treated area.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Define the trial question

Identify whether the evaluation concerns cleaning time, residue, appearance or water behaviour. Record the actual material and outer finish. A reference of another metal or texture cannot answer every question about the treated surface.

Document the preparation

Keep starting condition and any earlier treatments visible for both areas. A supposedly uncoated section may already carry a factory finish or cleaning product. Do not label it bare metal without confirming that identity.

Keep care and exposure recorded

Use approved methods and note relevant differences in contact, contamination and cleaning. A sheltered reference and a heavily used treated area should not be ranked as if they had equal service conditions.

Compare the stated result

Inspect the agreed endpoint under comparable conditions and retain original observations. Explain where the reference supports the conclusion and where it does not. Do not convert one short trial into a universal corrosion or durability claim.

Frequently asked question

Does any untreated metal sample make a fair control?

No. Match the relevant surface and conditions and identify prior finishes or treatments.
