A Marine Coating Quote for a Vessel with Repaired Sections

Record repairs and finish differences before estimating preparation and protective treatment.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Repaired sections can change the coating scope of a vessel. A quote should identify those areas and use the relevant finish information before estimating preparation or recommending treatment. The original vessel specification may no longer describe every surface.

Build a repair map

Record replaced, refinished or otherwise altered zones. Obtain available information from the repairer about the actual finish and its guidance. Include known prior treatments and mark uncertain details for review. Use photographs to locate repairs rather than relying only on a general description.

Assess each relevant finish

Review compatibility and timing using the refinish information and proposed coating instructions. For example, a painted repair next to original gelcoat should not automatically receive the same preparation assumptions. Separate restoration or appearance questions from protective-treatment selection.

Quote the supported scope

Explain included surfaces, exclusions and any condition-dependent work. State what must be confirmed before the final process or schedule is agreed. Record approved changes during the project and carry them into the crew handover. A transparent quote lets the owner understand why repaired areas may require additional assessment without implying that every repair presents the same problem. The objective is a treatment plan based on the vessel as it exists now, not as it was originally delivered.

Separate repaired sections in the quotation

Identify repair locations, finish systems, available release guidance and any changes to surrounding treatment. Ask the repairer and coating supplier the questions relevant to their own processes. Keep original and repaired zones distinct until the assessment supports a common approach.

State which preparation assumptions are confirmed and which remain provisional. If the repaired appearance needs acceptance before protection, include that decision point. Do not quote the vessel as one uniform surface merely because the repair colour matches. A clear scope allows the owner to understand why specific zones require different timing, assessment or work and gives the crew an accurate record after completion.
