Identify the actual coating or finish on the component before choosing cosmetic protection.

A painted aluminium component should be assessed as a finished surface, not simply as bare aluminium. The visible paint or coating system and its history are central to a cosmetic-protection enquiry. Identify them before choosing a product.
Record its location, finish supplier information and known repairs or previous treatments. Identify adjacent seals, fixings and operating functions. Photographs can help explain the assembly but may not establish the exact finish or its compatibility with another product.
State which surfaces are intended for treatment and what appearance or maintenance goal is being discussed. Keep operational, submerged or other special-use requirements outside assumptions based on a decorative application. For example, approval for an identified painted cover does not extend automatically to every metal part beneath it.
Provide the coating manufacturer with the actual finish information and use conditions. Review current instructions and an appropriate representative trial where required. Record the selected product, boundaries and unresolved questions before work begins. The handover should preserve those details for the crew. This approach avoids choosing a coating solely because its marketing mentions metal, while ignoring the paint system that the product would actually contact on the vessel.
Record the component, exposed finish, repair history and available supplier information. The aluminium substrate does not by itself describe the surface the coating will contact. Distinguish decorative painted areas from bare metal and functional interfaces.
Send the actual finish information to the coating supplier and ask for the appropriate compatibility and preparation route. Do not infer approval from a product used on another aluminium component. Keep the answer attached to the specific component and use. This helps the owner and installer avoid treating a broad material label as a complete specification when the relevant decision concerns the paint or other outer finish.
