Assessing an Apparent Colour Change After Ceramic Coating

A vehicle can look different after detailing because dirt was removed, defects were reduced or the lighting changed. An apparent colour change may also involve sheen, residue or an unsuitable treatment on a sensitive finish. Compare the conditions carefully before assigning a cause or attempting correction.

Compare under consistent lighting

View the same area in comparable light and from similar angles. Avoid using a heavily edited before photograph as the only reference. Metallic, pearl, matte and satin finishes can appear different as reflections and viewing positions change.

Review what work changed the surface

List cleaning, decontamination, polishing and products applied. An improvement in clarity after correction should not automatically be attributed to the coating. Equally, an unwanted change should not be dismissed without checking the actual finish and product suitability.

Give matte and satin areas separate attention

Check the product’s suitability and the test-area record. An increase in sheen can be undesirable even if the surface looks uniform. Do not polish a matte or satin area to correct a suspected coating issue without the appropriate surface and product guidance.

Document before treatment
