Powder-Coated Aluminium Sample Panels: Test the Finish You Will Actually Receive

Evaluate a coating on the actual powder-coated aluminium finish, including its texture, cure history and approved cleaning process.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A test on bare aluminium cannot approve a treatment for powder-coated aluminium. The exposed surface is the powder finish, whose chemistry, texture and production history may affect appearance and compatibility.

Specify the supplied finish

Record the powder product, colour, gloss or texture designation and production batch where available. Obtain representative panels from the intended production process. A showroom colour chip may not reproduce the surface that will arrive on the project.

Build the sample set

  • Untreated finish reference.
  • Prepared but uncoated panel.
  • Panel receiving the proposed coating.
  • Representative edge, joint or textured detail when relevant.

The prepared-only panel helps distinguish a cleaning effect from a coating effect.

Assess the relevant outcomes

Inspect colour, gloss, texture and uniformity after the specified conditioning period. Run the approved routine cleaning method and inspect again. If adhesion or chemical resistance is a project requirement, agree a suitable method with the finish and coating suppliers instead of substituting a water-beading demonstration.

Control later substitutions

Attach the accepted sample identity to the specification. If the fabricator changes powder supplier, finish class or texture, review whether the approval still applies. For example, a smooth gloss finish and a heavily textured matte finish should not share an appearance acceptance solely because their colour code matches. The trial should represent the final exposed finish and its real maintenance conditions.
