A Stainless Assembly Mock-Up for Corners, Welds and Cleaning Access

Use an assembly mock-up to test coating access and cleaning at stainless corners and welds before committing to full production.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A flat stainless coupon is useful for compatibility screening, but it cannot show whether an installer can prepare, coat and inspect a recessed weld or tight corner. A small assembly mock-up answers those practical questions earlier.

Include the difficult details

Choose representative corners, weld finishes, fasteners and returns. Use the intended materials and fabrication process. Label any simplification so the mock-up is not presented as a complete replica of production.

Run the intended workflow

Ask the actual type of operator to perform the approved preparation and application sequence. Record tool access, visibility and time. A method demonstrated by a specialist on an open bench may need adjustment for an installed assembly.

Inspect by feature

  • Broad panels: uniform accepted appearance.
  • Corners: access for application and removal of excess.
  • Welds: agreed substrate finish and local appearance.
  • Recesses: cleaning access and retained residue.
  • Transitions: clear boundaries between treated and excluded areas.

Feed findings into the specification

Record whether a difficulty requires a tool change, process change, design review or explicit exclusion. For example, a narrow return that cannot be inspected may need a revised assembly sequence before coating. Do not solve poor access by simply adding more product. Approve the final mock-up and retain its process record. Production can then be checked against a demonstrated method, including the awkward features that a flat sample would have missed.
