Build a simple uncertainty budget for a coating measurement and distinguish standard uncertainty from repeatability or instrument resolution.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A coating result is more useful when the report explains how uncertain it is. Repeating a measurement addresses only part of that uncertainty. Calibration, positioning and other significant influences may also matter.
State exactly what is being reported: for example, the mean reading from a specified procedure on a defined area. Identify relevant uncertainty components and express them as standard uncertainties in compatible units. Avoid counting the same source twice under different names.
Suppose three independent contributions to an illustrative result are 0.8 units from repeatability, 0.5 from calibration and 0.6 from positioning. If the model has unit sensitivity coefficients and the contributions are uncorrelated, the combined standard uncertainty is:
sqrt(0.8² + 0.5² + 0.6²) = sqrt(1.25) ≈ 1.12 units.
These numbers illustrate the calculation; they are not a NANOLAB test result or a complete budget for a particular instrument.
| Question | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Are inputs correlated? | Covariance may need to be included |
| Are all values standard uncertainties? | Convert ranges or expanded values appropriately |
| Is the model nonlinear? | A more suitable propagation method may be needed |
An expanded uncertainty requires a stated coverage factor and justified interpretation. Do not label every doubled value as an exact 95% interval without checking the assumptions and degrees of freedom.
NIST’s uncertainty guidance explains the underlying combination principle. A qualified measurement specialist should review a budget used for acceptance or a public claim. The useful habit is to expose the main contributions, so improvement targets the largest limitation rather than adding more decimal places.
The sources below support the stated concepts or describe their own methods. The worked scenarios are editorial examples, not NANOLAB test results.
