Code coating photographs before review to reduce label-driven judgements and record which visual differences reviewers can actually reproduce.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A photograph labelled with a preferred product can influence what a reviewer expects to see. Coding the images does not make visual assessment perfectly objective, but it helps separate the observed difference from the product story.
Use photographs taken under matched lighting, exposure, focus and surface conditions. Remove product names from the review copies while preserving an untouched master set. Randomise the presentation order and keep the code key with someone who is not scoring the images.
Do not remove relevant context such as whether a surface is wet or dry. Blinding should conceal identity, not conceal differences in the test procedure.
Instead of asking which coating is best, ask which image shows less visible haze in a marked area, or whether an agreed defect is present. Include an option for no distinguishable difference. A forced winner can create confidence where the photographs contain little information.
In an illustrative review, include the same image twice under different codes. If a reviewer gives it substantially different scores, investigate the instruction, display conditions or scoring scale before treating small product differences as meaningful.
| Record | Reason |
|---|---|
| Image code and order | Reconstruct the review |
| Reviewer and display | Identify viewing differences |
| Score and short reason | Understand the judgement |
Compare disagreements before opening the code key. A consistent visual preference may justify further physical inspection, but it does not establish durability or chemical resistance. Keep those questions in tests designed for them.
Blind review is most useful when the photographs already contain controlled, relevant evidence.
