Coated Gelcoat at the Stern: Investigate Where Dark Deposits Begin

Dark deposits at a boat's stern can come from several exposure routes, including runoff and nearby equipment operation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Dark deposits at a boat's stern can come from several exposure routes, including runoff and nearby equipment operation. Their position provides useful clues, but colour alone does not identify the material. Establish the source before repeatedly treating coated gelcoat with stronger cleaners.

Map the deposit before cleaning

Photograph the stern dry, including the full pattern and nearby fittings. Note when the deposit appears and whether it follows a particular activity. Keep observations separate from mechanical diagnosis; unusual equipment behaviour or suspected leakage belongs with the appropriate marine service provider.

Identify the gelcoat and coating condition and use an approved cleaning trial. Work with safe access and follow the boatyard or marina's requirements for cleaning products and runoff. Do not use a solvent or abrasive method simply because a dark mark looks stubborn.

Inspect the fully dry result. A deposit that returns along the same path after normal use suggests an ongoing exposure that cleaning alone will not change. Retain the timing and photographs for the service assessment.

Resolve the source before restoration

Once the relevant equipment or runoff issue is addressed, reassess the surface for staining, oxidation or physical damage. A coating does not repair degraded gelcoat or provide a universal barrier against every contaminant. Any restoration should follow the substrate and coating supplier's approved process.

Record the accepted appearance and restart the normal maintenance routine. Inspect the former deposit route during subsequent use to confirm whether the pattern has changed. This creates a useful evidence trail and avoids treating each recurrence as an isolated coating failure while the same source continues feeding contamination onto the stern.
