Ceramic Coating over Paint-Matched PPF: Check Appearance in Daylight

Paint-matched PPF can make protected and unprotected panels look similar, yet their surface finishes may still respond differently to a coating.

Paint-matched PPF can make protected and unprotected panels look similar, yet their surface finishes may still respond differently to a coating. Before treating the vehicle, evaluate colour, gloss and texture under realistic viewing conditions. A match under workshop lighting may look different outdoors.

Compare representative surfaces

Identify the exact film and which panels carry it. Include replacement sections, exposed paint and curved areas in the inspection. Clean both surfaces using compatible methods and assess them dry before adding any treatment. Existing mismatch should be recorded separately from any change caused by the proposed coating.

Use an approved test on representative film material or an agreed discreet area. Allow the specified cure before judging appearance. Inspect in diffuse daylight, direct sunlight where practical and the lighting normally used for vehicle handover. Keep photographs consistent in exposure and viewing angle.

Look at the boundary between film and paint rather than assessing each panel in isolation. A small difference may become more noticeable along an adjacent edge or across a large flat surface. Water photographs are not a substitute for this appearance check.

Agree the acceptable result

Discuss any change in sheen or colour with the owner before extending the treatment. Do not promise that coating will correct a mismatch caused by the underlying paint, film batch or installation. The appropriate solution may require the film installer or body repairer.

Where the combination is approved and the result accepted, use the same preparation and application procedure across comparable areas. Document exceptions and maintain compatible care for both surfaces. Consistency in the process reduces avoidable variation, but it cannot guarantee that different materials will become optically identical.
