Coated Mirror Housings with Integrated Cameras: Define the Cosmetic Boundary

An exterior mirror housing may surround a camera lens, indicator, lamp, seal and folding mechanism.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

An exterior mirror housing may surround a camera lens, indicator, lamp, seal and folding mechanism. These components share an assembly but not necessarily a cleaning or coating specification. Define the cosmetic housing as a limited work area before treating it, rather than wiping the entire mirror with one product.

Identify the excluded components

Check the vehicle manual for camera and mirror care. Locate the lens and any protective cover carefully; a dark insert is not always decorative trim. Unless the relevant manufacturer expressly permits the treatment, keep paint coating and polishing products away from optical surfaces.

Inspect the housing for damage and note normal camera operation before work. Clean the approved painted or plastic shell using controlled amounts of suitable product. Avoid directing liquid into the folding joint or manipulating the mirror beyond its normal range.

Remove residue from accessible seams with appropriate soft tools. Use a separate clean cloth for the housing so abrasive contamination is not carried across neighbouring components. Lens care should follow its own instructions, not the procedure selected for correcting painted plastic.

Inspect the perimeter after application

Apply coating only to compatible cosmetic surfaces, and keep the applicator within that boundary. Pay attention beneath the housing, where product can collect and where a downward-facing camera may be difficult to see. Levelling should not push excess onto excluded parts.

After the required cure, confirm normal mirror movement and check the camera display in an appropriate safe setting. A hazy image can have several causes; do not assume it will clear by polishing the lens. Record any problem and use the vehicle's service guidance. Cosmetic protection should leave the assembly's intended functions intact.
