A very soft foam pad may seem ideal for finish polish, yet its flexibility can make contact less stable on some contours. Softness is not a complete guarantee of a refined result. Check whether the pad supports controlled movement on the actual shape.
With the tool stopped, examine how the pad face meets the panel and whether the backing plate has suitable clearance. Consider the entire planned movement, including the shoulders of a curve and nearby trim.
Do not press harder to make a collapsing pad behave like a more supported one. If the face twists or the assembly becomes difficult to control, choose a compatible alternative or change the access method.
Use the supported finishing liquid and procedure on a representative area. Inspect after compatible residue removal for uniform clarity, fine marring and differences between the centre and edges of the working footprint.
A smooth-feeling cycle is not sufficient if the cleaned surface shows uneven refinement. Equally, a pad that feels firmer in the hand may produce the better controlled finish when used as intended.
Where appropriate, test another manufacturer-supported pad profile or size while keeping the liquid and inspection method consistent. Record exact pad models rather than describe them only as soft and medium.
Include handling and maintenance in the evaluation. A pad that finishes one flat patch well but becomes unstable on the vehicle’s common contours may be a poor whole-job choice.
Avoid using the most flexible pad to reach a recess that really requires a smaller tool. Geometry and assembly clearance remain limiting factors regardless of foam softness.
The accepted combination should refine the surface consistently while remaining controllable through the intended movement. Finish polishing is not a competition to use the softest material available. It is a process for reaching the required appearance with a stable, compatible working system.
