An improvement percentage is meaningless without a baseline.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
An improvement percentage is meaningless without a baseline. When a graphene coating report says performance improved, ask what it improved against and how the difference was calculated.
The baseline might be an uncoated panel, a matched formulation without the additive, a previous product revision or a competing retail coating. Each comparison answers a different question. Keep the comparator’s identity and preparation visible in the report and any marketing summary.
If a task takes 10 minutes with the baseline and 8 minutes with the tested product, the observed reduction is 2 minutes, or 20% of the baseline time. That example illustrates arithmetic, not a NANOLAB test result. It also does not prove the additive caused the difference unless the experimental design isolates that factor.
A useful improvement claim includes the baseline, endpoint and conditions. Customers should not have to infer whether ‘better’ means better than nothing, better than a predecessor or better because of graphene specifically.
