A Magnet Cannot Identify the Exact Stainless Steel Grade

Magnetic attraction is not a complete stainless-steel identification test. Use material documentation or an appropriate qualified assessment when the exact grade matters to a coating project.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Worldstainless describes stainless families with different magnetic behaviour. A simple magnet observation therefore cannot establish a precise grade, finish or corrosion suitability for the intended environment.

Practical checks

  1. Request the component's material and finish records.
  2. Record uncertainty rather than assigning a grade from appearance or magnet response.
  3. Confirm the coating's approval for the actual exposed surface.

Example

Illustrative example: a panel attracts a magnet, and a contractor concludes that it cannot be stainless steel. That conclusion ignores the range of stainless families and may misdirect the preparation discussion.

Scope and limits

Do not use this guide to select structural or corrosion-critical alloys. The material specialist should resolve grade identification; coating selection remains a separate assessment of the finish and intended use.
