Coating Packaging Substitutions: Approve the Full Component Combination

A replacement component should be assessed in the complete package, not only as an isolated item with similar dimensions. Bottle, closure, liner, label and secondary packaging can interact in ways that affect the finished pack.

The key distinction

The substitution request should identify why the change is needed and which approved functions may be affected. The packaging team can then define a targeted review. A supplier statement that a part is equivalent should be supported by the relevant specification and trial for the actual product configuration.

Practical checks

  1. Record the original and proposed component identities.
  2. Review interfaces and functions affected by the change.
  3. Approve a representative assembled pack before releasing the substitution to production.

Example

Illustrative example: a replacement cap fits the bottle thread, but the complete pack has not been evaluated with its liner and handling process. Fit alone does not establish every required function. The review should address the assembled system rather than stopping at a successful hand-tightening check.

Scope and limits

Do not assume a packaging substitution leaves product storage performance unchanged. This guide does not specify chemical compatibility tests or universal acceptance limits. The responsible supplier and packaging specialists should define the necessary evidence for the exact material, component and use conditions.
