Filter Micron Ratings for Coating Equipment: Ask for the Efficiency Definition

A micron rating alone does not fully describe filter performance. Ask whether the rating is nominal or absolute and obtain the efficiency and test basis used by the manufacturer.

The key distinction

Parker's guidance highlights the need to interpret particle size together with removal efficiency. The exact rating convention and product application matter, so a familiar number should not be treated as universal equivalence.

Practical checks

  1. Obtain the complete filter specification.
  2. Ask how the stated rating was established.
  3. Confirm whether filtration is approved for the actual coating process.

Example

Illustrative example: two filters both display ten microns but use different rating definitions. Selecting one solely because the number matches can change the process in an unreviewed way.

Scope and limits

Do not filter a finished coating or remove unexpected material without supplier authorization. This guide explains equipment terminology and does not recommend a filtration step for NANOLAB products.
