Reorder Cohorts for a Coating Brand: Measure Repeat Buying Fairly

Compare coating reorder cohorts after equal observation periods, accounting for first-order size and customer consumption patterns.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A reorder cohort groups customers by a common starting point, such as their first paid purchase month. Comparing cohorts after the same elapsed time avoids judging new customers against customers who have had much longer to reorder.

Define the event and eligibility

Choose what counts as a first purchase and a repeat purchase. Keep samples, replacements and internal orders separate. Decide whether the measure follows a customer account, workshop location or another stable entity.

In an illustrative January cohort of 40 first-time buyers, 12 reorder within 90 days, giving 30 percent. A March cohort observed for only 30 days should not be compared directly with that 90-day result.

Account for different consumption patterns

A large initial order may delay the next purchase even when the customer is satisfied. A small trial order may lead to an early reorder. Compare order size and customer type alongside the repeat rate.

For coatings used by installers, the relevant cycle may depend on job volume and product use. A fixed short window can misclassify low-volume but active customers as disengaged. Choose the window to answer the business question and keep it consistent.

Use the findings to improve support

Look for cohorts with unusual repeat behaviour and investigate changes in onboarding, availability, packaging or customer mix. The rate alone does not diagnose product performance. Customers may leave for commercial or operational reasons that are absent from the transaction record.

Report cohort size, observation window, repeat count and relevant exclusions. This gives a private-label brand a more reliable view of adoption than a blended repeat-order percentage that changes whenever a new marketing campaign adds many first-time buyers. It also helps identify when technical guidance or aftercare education may be useful without assuming every missing reorder is a product complaint.
