Allocate artwork and label setup costs across realistic usable volumes and account for revisions before judging launch unit economics.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
One-time setup costs become smaller per unit as more usable units are sold. The key word is usable: spreading a cost across an optimistic future volume can make an early launch look more profitable than its evidence supports.
In an illustrative launch, artwork and print setup cost 600 currency units. Across 300 usable units, the setup allocation is 2 per unit. Across 1,200 units it would be 0.50, but that lower figure assumes the same approved design remains usable for all 1,200.
Keep the cash payment separate from the allocation. Paying 600 now affects cash now even if a planning spreadsheet spreads it over future sales. The allocation is a costing view, not a change in when money leaves the business.
Changes to product identity, required information, languages, bottle dimensions or brand design may create a new setup. Do not assume the original artwork cost applies indefinitely. Record the revision and the stock of labels or cartons associated with it.
For comparison, show at least a first-run case and a realistic repeat-order case. If a supplier includes setup in the first unit price, identify that structure before comparing it with a quote showing setup separately.
Unused printed stock and abandoned designs are real project costs. Keep them visible in the launch review rather than allocating them to an unrelated successful SKU. This helps the next product brief improve.
For a private-label coating, stabilize the technical information and packaging dimensions before final artwork approval. A modest first-run cost may be preferable to a low theoretical unit allocation that depends on selling a large quantity of packaging whose wording is likely to change.
