A Product Discontinuation Handover for a Coating Brand

Plan support and document access for existing customers when an item leaves the active range.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Removing a coating product from the active range does not remove the needs of customers who already use it. A discontinuation handover should preserve product identification, current support routes and access to relevant instructions. Treat sales availability and customer support as separate decisions.

Identify affected records

List the product names, pack versions, documents and customer-facing pages involved. Determine which stock and sample references remain in use. Keep historical information distinguishable from the current catalogue so staff can answer questions about an older bottle accurately.

Review alternatives carefully

Do not label a replacement as identical unless that relationship has been confirmed. Explain which intended uses have been assessed and which require a fresh recommendation. For example, a new product may fit a similar customer need while using different instructions or an approved system sequence.

Preserve a useful support path

Update purchasing pages without unnecessarily removing the information existing customers need. Give staff an approved explanation and a route for technical questions. Record how remaining stock and documents will be handled. If website addresses change, review redirects and retained information individually. A well-managed discontinuation allows the range to evolve while keeping earlier customers connected to accurate product information instead of leaving them to infer that a differently named bottle follows the same procedure.

Plan the support period for a discontinued product

Identify remaining stock, existing customers, historical instructions and the approved route for future questions. State whether a replacement is confirmed and which differences matter. Do not automatically rename old installations as the replacement product.

Keep customer-facing documents available for the product that was actually sold, clearly distinguishing them from current purchase options. If a customer needs maintenance advice, the discontinued status does not make another product compatible by default. Record who can answer substitution questions. A good handover preserves traceability and avoids orphaning customers who still use the original product, while allowing the catalogue and stock team to move forward with a clear, accurate range.
