Iron Contamination on Stainless Steel Before Nano Coating: Resolve the Surface History

A stainless component can carry contamination from fabrication or handling. Identify and resolve the surface condition before treating a nano coating as the next automatic step.

Review the fabrication history

Ask about cutting, grinding, blasting and nearby work where information is available. Record visible discolouration and the tools or media identified by the fabricator. Appearance alone should not be used to assign a source or declare the steel grade unsuitable.

Use the appropriate finishing assessment

Outokumpu’s post-fabrication guidance stresses the importance of removing fabrication-related defects and using uncontaminated finishing media. That is a metal-finishing question, not evidence that an aftermarket coating can replace the required surface treatment.

Accept the prepared finish

Have the responsible specialist define and complete any required remediation. Inspect the accepted appearance and obtain the relevant preparation record. Do not cover unresolved staining simply because water beads on a trial area.

Confirm the coating application

Review the exact outer finish and product instructions after the preparation work. Keep suitability, application and aftercare separate from the fabrication correction. Retain both records so later observations can be reviewed without guessing which stage addressed the original problem.

Frequently asked question

Can nano coating remove embedded iron contamination?

Do not assume that function. Assess the contamination and appropriate metal-finishing process before selecting protective treatment.
