Paint Assessment After PPF Removal: Separate Film Residue from Finish Damage

Removing PPF reveals a surface that needs assessment before polishing. Adhesive residue, paint differences and damage must not be grouped into one correction task.

Preserve the first observation

Photograph the exposed panel and any remaining adhesive. Record the film identity, age if known and removal process supplied by the installer. Do not start heavy compounding before establishing what is on or within the finish.

Complete compatible residue removal

Use a product and process suitable for the actual paint and surrounding materials. Ask the installer or refinisher about uncertain areas. Once the approved cleanup is complete, inspect the clean dry finish and distinguish removable residue from changes that remain.

Build a new protection plan

Choose polishing only for assessed correctable defects, with sound finish and a controlled test. Refer damaged or unstable paint before further treatment. Record whether new film or coating will be installed, since the next protection system determines the final preparation requirements.

Frequently asked question

Does PPF removal automatically require heavy cut compound?

No. The inspected condition after appropriate residue removal determines whether any abrasive correction is justified.
