Paint Thickness Readings on Steel and Aluminium: Record the Substrate

A thickness record should identify the measured substrate and gauge method. A mixed-material vehicle can produce readings that are not directly comparable.

Map materials without guessing

Use reliable vehicle information and the gauge’s supported detection method. A component that looks metallic may be a different material from an adjacent panel. Record uncertain areas as uncertain, and do not force a reading where the probe is unsuitable.

Keep comparisons meaningful

Compare repeat measurements on suitable, similar locations using the same instrument conditions. A lower number on one panel does not automatically mean thinner clear coat. Substrate response, total coating layers and repair history all affect what the recorded values can support.

Turn the record into an action

Attach the substrate and any measurement limitations to the panel map. When discussing polishing, separate the measured number from the chosen correction scope. If a surface needs a different instrument or specialist assessment, obtain that rather than estimating from neighbouring panels.

Frequently asked question

Can one average reading represent a mixed-material car?

It hides important differences. Keep results grouped by panel, substrate and measurement method, with unresolved areas identified.
