Nano Coating Gloss, Haze and Reflection Clarity

A surface can look bright while its reflected image remains blurred or surrounded by haze. Gloss is therefore only one part of appearance. When evaluating a nano ceramic coating, define what the owner or customer actually wants to see.

Separate the visual properties

BYK’s appearance guidance distinguishes gloss, haze and distinctness of image. These relate to different aspects of how a surface reflects light. A single gloss value does not fully describe whether a reflection looks crisp, milky or uneven.

Also consider the original surface texture. Coating a panel does not automatically remove polishing defects, orange peel or scratches beneath it.

Record the preparation baseline

Inspect and photograph the prepared surface before coating. Use the same light, camera position and viewing distance for the later comparison. If polishing is performed between the before and after images, do not attribute the entire change to the coating.

For formal comparisons, use suitable instruments and measurement conditions for the appearance property being claimed.

Inspect after the instructed cure

Look at the reflected edge of a light source or a clear reference shape from several angles. Check for streaks, local haze and residue near panel boundaries. Keep the surface clean and dry so water or polishing oils do not temporarily change the appearance being assessed.

If a defect is visible, diagnose preparation, application and contamination before applying another layer. Additional product may make the cause harder to identify.

Define an acceptance standard

Use an approved sample or clear photographs to communicate the expected finish. For matte surfaces, increased gloss may be a failure rather than a benefit. For mirror-bright metal, reflection clarity may matter more than a small change in a gloss reading. A strong appearance assessment describes the surface, preparation and observation method, allowing the result to be reproduced instead of relying on an attractive but uncontrolled after photograph.
