Hydrophobic vs Oleophobic Nano Coatings

Distinguish water repellency from oil repellency when evaluating nano coatings, and choose tests that match the contamination and surface-care task.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Hydrophobic refers to water-repellent behaviour, while oleophobic refers to oil-repellent behaviour. A coating that forms rounded water droplets should not automatically be described as oil repellent, fingerprint proof or resistant to every stain. Different liquids interact differently with a surface.

Match the claim to the liquid

Contact-angle measurements describe wetting for a particular liquid on a particular surface. KRÜSS explains this dependence in its contact-angle guidance. A water measurement therefore cannot, by itself, establish how an oil or a complex fingerprint residue will behave.

Ask which liquids were used in the test and how the surface was prepared. A generic image of a droplet leaves those essential details unknown.

Separate repellency from removal

A liquid may spread yet still be removable through an approved cleaning process. Conversely, a droplet that initially beads can leave residue after exposure or drying. Evaluate the actual care task: what contaminant reaches the surface, how long it remains and how it is removed.

For decorative metal, ordinary handling marks may be more relevant than a pure-water test. Use a controlled, representative method rather than claiming total fingerprint prevention from water behaviour.

Check compatibility before testing

Choose a replaceable sample and an approved test approach. Do not deliberately expose a customer’s finish to an unfamiliar oil, solvent or staining substance. More formal claims require suitable laboratory methods and clear acceptance criteria.

Inspect the dry surface after the specified cleaning process, including colour, gloss and any remaining mark.

Read product claims narrowly

If a product is documented as hydrophobic, treat that as a water-related property within the stated test conditions. Ask for separate evidence when oil repellency, stain resistance or easy cleaning is required. The strongest nano coating specification names the liquid and maintenance outcome instead of combining several different properties into one vague claim of total protection.
