Ceramic Coating on Soft-Touch Interior Trim

Soft-touch trim may include a delicate surface layer over a rigid component. Ceramic coating compatibility cannot be assumed from the material underneath. The same caution applies to preparation: a cleaner acceptable on durable exterior plastic may be unsuitable for an interior tactile finish.

Inspect the existing condition

Look for tackiness, peeling, scratches and uneven wear. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s care guidance and whether the component has a special coating. Document existing damage before cleaning or testing.

Keep switches, labels, touch controls and seams in view when defining the scope. Do not flood a component or apply a product to functional surfaces merely because they sit within the same trim panel.

Ask a specific compatibility question

Provide the coating supplier with the vehicle or component details, finish description and intended cleaning process. ‘Interior plastic’ is too broad to establish suitability. Include whether the trim already feels sticky or is deteriorating.

Where an approved test is possible, use an inconspicuous area and assess appearance and feel after the specified process. Stop if the finish softens, changes or transfers. A positive result on one component does not automatically cover differently finished parts nearby.

Choose care over an unsupported treatment

At handover, identify which interior surfaces received protection and which did not. Avoid universal claims that every cabin surface is now ceramic-coated, particularly where the vehicle contains screens, controls and delicate decorative finishes with different care requirements.
