Ceramic Coating and Dew Point: Preventing Condensation

Plan a dry coating surface by checking condensation risk, panel temperature and changing workshop conditions before application.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Ceramic coating needs a prepared surface that stays dry throughout the relevant application stage. A workshop can feel comfortable while a recently moved vehicle remains cold enough for moisture to collect on its panels. Relative humidity alone does not describe that situation.

Check the panel as well as the room

Dew point is the temperature at which moisture in the surrounding air can begin to condense. If a panel approaches that temperature, a dry-looking finish may not remain dry. Record room temperature and relative humidity with a suitable instrument, then assess the actual surface with an appropriate thermometer. A room reading cannot substitute for a panel reading.

Use the coating manufacturer’s specified environmental limits and any required separation from dew point. There is no universal margin or waiting period that applies to every formula and building. If the instructions do not address the conditions you face, obtain product-specific guidance before starting.

Plan for transitions

A cold vehicle entering a warmer, humid bay is a different starting point from one that has stood indoors overnight. Opening a large door, washing nearby or switching climate control can also change conditions after the first measurement. Allow the vehicle to stabilise, complete drying and inspect seams before final preparation.

For example, do not accept a dry bonnet as proof that the shaded lower doors have reached the same temperature. Check representative surfaces, particularly where the vehicle’s recent exposure differs.

Use a simple hold point

Before opening the bottle, record the time, environmental readings, surface checks and whether conditions are stable. Proceed only within the current instructions. Pause if misting, renewed moisture or a substantial environmental change appears; wiping away condensation does not remove its cause.

Keep those observations with the job record. They help distinguish an environmental interruption from an application problem if the finish later needs review. Consult NANOLAB product documentation for the selected coating’s requirements.
