What Does Nano Mean on a Coating Label?

Interpret nano coating terminology without assuming particle size, film thickness or superior performance, and ask for evidence relevant to the finished product.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Nano is not a complete coating specification. In science, the nanoscale is commonly described as approximately 1 to 100 nanometres, but a product name alone does not establish which feature of the supplied coating is nanoscale or how that feature was measured.

Ask what the term refers to

The claim may concern particles, a structure formed during curing or another aspect of the technology. It should not automatically be interpreted as the thickness of the final applied film. Ask the manufacturer to explain the intended meaning in product-specific terms.

The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office defines nanotechnology around understanding and controlling matter at the nanoscale where relevant phenomena enable applications. That definition is not a performance certificate for a commercial coating.

Separate size from function

A size description does not by itself establish adhesion, durability, scratch resistance or suitability for a surface. Those properties need their own evidence and application context. Likewise, a visually transparent product is not proof of nanoscale particles.

For purchasing decisions, focus on the surface, preparation, cure and maintenance requirements before treating the word nano as a ranking factor.

Read technical claims with a measurement question

If a supplier gives a particle or structure size, ask what was measured, by which method and in what state. A raw material before formulation, a liquid dispersion and a cured film are not automatically the same measurement subject.

Do not require disclosure of a proprietary recipe merely to obtain a useful explanation of a performance claim. The evidence can be relevant and understandable without exposing the full formula.

Make the product decision practical

Evaluate the finished product through its approved workflow on a representative surface. Record appearance and maintenance outcomes, and retain the supporting documentation. Nano terminology can describe a technology choice, but the buying decision should rest on whether the exact coating solves the intended problem under conditions you can reproduce.
