Nano Coating Black Chrome and Dark Decorative Finishes

Evaluate black chrome and dark decorative finishes before nano coating, with tests for colour, sheen and visible residue on matching samples.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Black chrome is a finish description that should lead to a specification, not an automatic product choice. Dark decorative components can use different plating systems, coloured layers or clear finishes. A treatment suitable for bright chrome may change the appearance of a dark surface or require different preparation.

Ask for the actual finish information

Record the component maker, finish code and care instructions. Find out whether the outermost layer is a clear coating, a plated finish or another decorative treatment. Include the desired sheen: a satin component must not be judged by the gloss standard used for a mirror-bright part.

If the component is expensive or difficult to replace, request a matching production offcut or sample. A hidden underside may not have received the same finishing process as the visible face.

Compare appearance under useful lighting

Photograph the clean untreated sample in diffuse daylight and under the lighting where it will normally be used. Apply the proposed process to only part of the sample, following the product instructions. Keep an untreated reference alongside it.

After the instructed cure, look for darkening, colour shift, changes in sheen and visible wipe marks. View the sample at shallow angles as well as straight on. Do not approve the result from a wet photograph or a dramatic beading video; neither shows the final dry appearance reliably.

Include the first maintenance clean

An acceptable application result is only the beginning. Trial the intended cleaner and cloth after the coating permits washing. Inspect whether fingerprints can be removed without repeated rubbing and whether any residue is visible along edges. Record the complete process so a later installer can repeat it.

Set an appearance acceptance rule

Agree in advance whether any change in tone or sheen is acceptable. If preserving the original finish is essential, an observable change is a reason to decline that product for the project. The decision should be based on the exact black-chrome system, rather than assuming that the term nano means invisible or universally compatible.
