Sunscreen and Hand Marks on Coated Boat Surfaces

Frequently touched areas can collect sunscreen and other personal-care residues. These marks need a compatible cleaning approach, especially where several materials meet around seating and rails.

Identify the actual surface

Separate painted panels, stainless fittings, vinyl upholstery and glazing. The same residue may require different care on each material. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and any coating-specific guidance before applying a cleaner across the whole area.

Clean in a controlled area

Use the recommended method on a discreet spot, then inspect after rinsing and drying where directed. Keep cleaning tools free from polish or conditioner residues. Avoid repeatedly spreading an oily mark with an overloaded towel; switch to a clean section or tool as appropriate.

Improve the maintenance handover

Show the crew which contact points need attention during routine cleaning. Keep approved cleaners accessible and labelled by use. If a mark persists or the finish changes, stop adding products and ask for an assessment with the product history available. A consistent routine is easier to evaluate than a succession of improvised cleaners.
