Non-Slip Boat Decks: Check Suitability Before Coating

A textured deck is a functional walking surface. Any proposed treatment needs to be assessed for that use, rather than selected solely for gloss or water repellency.

Define the walking surface

Identify the deck material, texture and existing treatment. Explain whether it is regularly wet, used barefoot or exposed to footwear and working equipment. Include steps and boarding areas in the discussion. Suitability for a smooth hull panel does not establish suitability for a non-slip deck.

Obtain a specific recommendation

Ask the product supplier and deck manufacturer whether the treatment is approved for the intended surface and conditions. Do not infer slip performance from a coating’s hydrophobic behaviour. If appropriate approval or testing is unavailable, keep the deck outside the coating scope and use the deck manufacturer’s care system.

Preserve the maintenance plan

Clean texture with compatible methods so residues do not accumulate in recesses. Keep any approved treatment’s instructions with the vessel records. If feel or traction changes, restrict use of the affected area as appropriate and arrange assessment. A good project scope should make clear which walking surfaces remain untreated and why.
