Coating a Boat at the Berth or Ashore

The best location for a coating job depends on access, surface preparation and the ability to protect the work. Convenience alone should not determine where the application takes place.

Compare access realistically

List the areas that can be reached safely in each location. Working at a berth may limit access to particular hull sections, while work ashore may require suitable platforms and yard coordination. Ask the installer to identify any surfaces that cannot be inspected or prepared adequately under the proposed arrangement.

Consider surrounding activity

Check exposure to spray, dust, wind and nearby maintenance. Confirm whether the planned shelter can remain available throughout the required curing period. Include marina or yard requirements for cleaning and runoff. A location that suits a quick wash may not suit preparation and coating.

Make the choice visible in the quote

Specify access equipment, vessel movements and weather contingencies. Record how incomplete areas will be handled if conditions change. At handover, compare the treated-area map with the agreed scope. If the installer recommends moving the vessel, request the practical reason so the decision can be evaluated alongside timing and cost.
