Graphene Testing After Cleaning: Document the Surface Reset

Cleaning a test surface before measurement can change the observation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Cleaning a test surface before measurement can change the observation. In a graphene coating trial, the cleaning step should be part of the method rather than an invisible preparation detail.

Specify the process

Record the cleaner, dilution where applicable, contact time, tools, rinse and drying procedure. Confirm that the process is suitable for the product and substrate. If the aim is to assess performance after maintenance, say so. If the aim is to assess the untouched service condition, cleaning first may answer a different question.

Compare like with like

Do not compare a freshly cleaned treated panel with a contaminated control and attribute the entire difference to the coating. Likewise, do not assume that a cleaning process removes every possible residue. Keep the observation and any uncertainty separate from the proposed explanation.

A documented surface reset makes repeated measurements more interpretable. It helps distinguish the coating’s observed condition from the effects of preparation, contamination or maintenance without inventing a specific role for the graphene additive.
