Fabric-Coating Demonstrations: Do Not Compare Different Cushion Constructions

Two cushions with similar-looking fabric may behave differently because their construction is different. A fair protection demonstration identifies the fabric, backing and relevant assembly conditions before attributing every observation to the treatment.

The key distinction

A loose fabric layer, a tightly fitted cover and a padded cushion are not interchangeable test specimens. Even the way the sample is supported can change what a viewer sees during a liquid demonstration. Decide whether the trial is assessing the surface treatment on matched material or the performance of two complete upholstery assemblies.

Practical checks

  1. Use matched material and construction where the purpose is to compare treated and untreated conditions.
  2. Record the sample support, orientation and preparation so the demonstration can be understood later.
  3. Include the approved cleaning and dry inspection stages instead of ending the assessment at the first visible drop.

Example

Illustrative example: an untreated loose swatch is held over a gap while a treated swatch rests on a cushion. The demonstration changes both treatment and support. A more interpretable setup would keep the relevant construction consistent and clearly identify the treatment difference.

Scope and limits

Do not represent a demonstration as a standardized test unless it follows the named method. Avoid applying liquids or treatments to valuable upholstery merely to produce a comparison. Use suitable samples and an approved process that answers a defined customer question.
