Borophene Research Images: Label Schematics and Measurements Differently

A visual explanation can help customers understand borophene, but scientific-looking artwork should not be mistaken for a measurement of the commercial product.

A visual explanation can help customers understand borophene, but scientific-looking artwork should not be mistaken for a measurement of the commercial product. The caption needs to say what the image actually represents.

Choose an honest caption

For a conceptual lattice drawing, use wording such as ‘schematic illustration of a material structure’. For an analytical image, identify the sample and measurement context. Do not place a research image next to a bottle in a way that implies the bottle’s cured film was imaged unless that connection is documented.

Avoid visual overclaiming

A diagram of a continuous sheet should not imply that an additive-containing coating forms an uninterrupted borophene membrane. Likewise, glowing shields and atomic graphics should not be presented as evidence of a specific protection level. Their role is explanatory or decorative. The performance statement needs its own test and clear limitations.

Good visual communication makes the distinction easy to see. Customers can appreciate the material story without being encouraged to interpret illustrative artwork as proof of composition, film structure or durability.
