Comparing Fresh and Aged Coating Spectra without Overinterpreting a New Peak

Compare fresh and aged coating spectra with matched preparation, controls and processing before attributing a new feature to chemical degradation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A new feature in an aged coating spectrum can be an important clue, but it is not automatically a unique degradation product. Sampling, contamination, substrate contribution and data processing need review before assigning chemistry.

Match the measurement method

Record instrument mode, spectral range, resolution, background and sample preparation. For ATR-FTIR, contact conditions and crystal cleanliness matter. Compare fresh and aged material using a consistent procedure and retain the original unprocessed data.

Include relevant controls

Control Question
Uncoated substrate Which features may come from the support?
Unaged coating What is the initial spectrum?
Exposure or cleaning blank where appropriate Could retained contamination contribute?
Repeat sampling positions Is the feature consistent across the surface?

Check processing sensitivity

Baseline correction, normalisation and subtraction can change the apparent size or shape of a feature. Apply justified methods consistently and show whether the interpretation survives reasonable processing choices. Do not treat a subtraction artefact as a newly identified compound.

Connect chemistry to performance carefully

Ask a qualified analyst to assess assignments and whether additional methods are needed. A spectral change may support a chemical hypothesis without proving why cleanability changed. Conversely, a subtle spectrum does not establish unchanged performance. Report the analytical observation, proposed explanation and remaining uncertainty separately.
