Use a controlled known-area coupon to estimate retained dry coating mass, and check whether the mass difference exceeds measurement uncertainty.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A witness coupon can support a gravimetric estimate of retained coating mass, but thin films may produce a difference too small for an ordinary balance to resolve reliably. Start with the measurement capability, not a desired number.
Use a known exposed area, stable substrate and defined preparation. Record whether edges and the reverse are treated or masked. Condition the uncoated and coated coupon under a justified procedure before weighing, avoiding contamination and uncontrolled moisture changes.
Subtract the accepted pre-coating mass from the accepted post-conditioning mass. Divide by the treated area. In an illustrative example, a 2 mg increase over 100 square centimetres corresponds to 200 mg per square metre. That arithmetic is meaningful only if the method can distinguish a 2 mg change from other variation.
The result estimates mass retained under the conditioning method; it does not automatically identify chemical composition or uniformity. Converting mass per area to thickness requires a suitable film-density value and assumptions about coverage and structure. If the signal is too small, report the method limitation or select a more suitable analytical approach rather than publishing a highly precise thickness derived from unresolved mass.
