Stainless steel kick plates receive contact from shoes, bags, cleaning equipment and floor-level debris. A cosmetic protective coating should be specified with that abrasion pattern in mind. It does not turn a decorative plate into a scratch-proof surface or remove the need to manage repeated hard contact.
Identify the plate's finish and existing treatment. Photograph scratches, dents and recurring impact points before cleaning. Note whether the door opens against a trolley, whether floor equipment contacts the plate or whether a loose fitting changes its position.
Clean using a method approved for the metal finish and coating. Keep cloths and tools used at floor level separate from those used on higher decorative panels. Grit collected near the threshold should not be carried back across the plate during final wiping.
If a mechanical contact pattern is causing damage, address it through the building's maintenance process. Additional coating is not a substitute for correcting a protruding fitting or inappropriate equipment contact.
Agree which existing marks will remain and whether restoration or replacement is needed before coating. A test on a compatible clean area can assess appearance, but an untouched sample cannot predict every busy-entrance exposure.
Review the plate after normal use and the same approved cleaning routine. Track new damage separately from removable dirt and coating observations. If repeated cosmetic treatment is consuming time without improving the service outcome, consider a more suitable finish or replaceable component with the building supplier. The useful specification balances appearance, access and expected wear rather than promising that surface chemistry can prevent all physical abrasion.
