Patterns in Toughened Glass: Check for Anisotropy Before Blaming a Coating

Some patterns visible in heat-treated glass originate in the glass manufacturing process rather than in a surface coating. Establish the glazing type and viewing conditions before trying to remove a pattern with cleaner or polish.

The key distinction

Vitro describes anisotropy as a visual effect associated with strain patterns in heat-treated glass. This does not mean every unusual mark is anisotropy, nor does it diagnose a particular installation. It provides a reason to involve the glazing supplier when a pattern changes with viewing conditions or does not respond to the appropriate surface-cleaning assessment.

Practical checks

  1. Photograph the pattern from a consistent position and record the time, lighting and glass identity.
  2. Compare the observation with the pre-treatment record if one exists, without applying further products to test a theory.
  3. Ask the glazing supplier to assess whether the feature belongs to the glass construction or the exposed surface.

Example

Illustrative example: a patterned effect is noticed after a window-cleaning visit and is assumed to be residue. The effect is also visible in earlier photographs under similar light. That history changes the investigation and may prevent unnecessary abrasive intervention.

Scope and limits

Do not declare the glass acceptable, defective or repairable from this description alone. Optical assessment belongs with the appropriate glazing expertise. A cosmetic nano coating is not a general correction method for heat-treatment patterns, and polishing may create a different surface problem.
