Ceramic Coating Gloss Measurements: Why the Angle Matters

Compare gloss readings with the same measurement geometry, surface preparation and locations rather than treating every gloss number as equivalent.

A gloss reading is meaningful only with its measurement conditions. Instruments use specified geometries to assess reflected light, and readings taken at different angles should not be treated as interchangeable. This matters when comparing ceramic coating results on already glossy paint.

Record the measurement setup

Note the instrument, measurement angle, calibration check and surface locations. Follow the instrument’s guidance for the finish being assessed. Curved panels and small areas may not provide a suitable seating surface for every meter.

Clean the test area consistently and avoid measuring one surface while it contains polishing residue and another after final preparation. Those are different starting conditions, regardless of which coating will later be applied.

Separate correction from coating

Take a baseline after the agreed paint preparation, then measure the coated result at the specified stage. If polishing and coating occur between the only two readings, the change cannot be attributed solely to the coating.

Repeat measurements at mapped locations and report the spread as well as a representative value. A single best reading selected from many positions does not describe the whole panel. Keep photographs under consistent lighting as a complementary record, not a substitute for the measurement.

Interpret gloss alongside suitability

MATRIX PRO is positioned for glossy finishes. That product role should still be assessed together with application requirements, surface compatibility and care. Gloss readings do not establish impact resistance, coating thickness or service life.

For a customer-facing report, state the method in ordinary language and distinguish measured results from visual impressions. Where no instrument was used, describe the appearance honestly instead of inventing a gloss percentage from photographs.
