What Water Beading Can Tell You About Boat Coating

Water behaviour is useful to observe, but it is only one part of assessing a coated boat. Cleanliness, surface shape and recent maintenance products can influence what the water looks like.

Start with a clean comparison

Follow the approved wash routine and remove cleaner residue as directed. Compare similar areas under similar conditions rather than contrasting a dirty horizontal ledge with a clean vertical panel. Record recent products that may have changed the surface temporarily.

Include practical observations

Look at dry appearance and how routine contamination responds to the permitted cleaning method. Note patchiness or areas that behave differently after cleaning. A dramatic bead photograph does not establish a service life, film thickness or universal resistance to chemicals.

Ask before adding a topper

If water behaviour changes, share the cleaning history and photographs with the installer. A maintenance product may be appropriate, but adding one immediately can make the underlying condition harder to assess. Agree whether cleaning, inspection or local service should come first. Keep any new maintenance step in the log so future comparisons remain meaningful.
